Horseshoe Headrest
Source: IMRIS Inc.

Product Development Solutions recently teamed up with IMRIS Inc. to deliver a truly first-of-its-kind product within the medical equipment industry.

The launch of our “horseshoe headrest” marks the world’s first MR-safe and CT-compatible headrest ever created by medical equipment manufacturers. The device will be used for positioning patients of all ages, from neonatal to adult, in neurosurgical procedures.

This device helps professionals overcome challenges in neurosurgical procedures that require intraoperative imaging.

Dr. James Baumgartner, Surgical Director of the Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Florida Hospital, said that the headrest would expand the use of intraoperative imaging for patients who cannot be properly positioned for surgery using traditional head fixation devices, especially neonatal and younger patients.

This innovative device delivers unpinned head support in multiple positions during head, neck and spine procedures. The head is most typically held still by a clamp-like device. However, these devices are not a good solution for patients, like babies and the elderly, whose skulls are too fragile or soft for pinning.

Jay D. Miller, IMRIS President and CEO, added that many pediatric surgeons offered tremendous support during the development of the product. The headrest will allow them to use iMR on more patients who will benefit from reduced costs and lower re-operation rates without sacrificing quality of care.

This sophisticated technology gives surgeons and caregivers a world of opportunity to treat and care for pediatric tumor and epilepsy patients.

IMRIS provides image guided therapy solutions to healthcare providers around the world. They developed the VISIUS Surgical Theatre, an innovative multifunctional surgical environment that offers intraoperative vision to assist in the decision-making process prior to treatment.

Product Development Solutions is proud to work side-by-side with IMRIS on such an influential product development project that few medical equipment manufacturers can handle. Contact us today to learn more about our service, or get a fast quote for an innovative project.
